6th grade Syllabus

Week of Aug. 22nd.- We begin by looking at our course outline and on-line class page. Afterwards, we will take  Pre-Test then talk about “Why Geography matters”. Then  we will look at the 5 Themes of Geography, The Five Themes of Geography. We will Rap a Tune that shows our understanding of these themes along with looking over our notes so that we are ready for a quiz next Monday.

Week of Aug. 26th- We will look at the 5 Themes of Geography, The Five Themes of Geography. We will Rap a Tune that shows our understanding of these themes along with looking over our notes so that we are ready for a quiz on Tuesday. On Tuesday, we will take a look at the Ilike2learn.com site and go over our current events schedule along with any other questions about the class. On Weds. we will look at Changes within the Earth, Land, Air, and Water and conclude with changes on the surface. Thursday will be your quiz over this material.

Week of Sept. 3rd- On Tuesday we will look over the results of last weeks quiz and then take a look at a video clip on Mt. St. Helens. That will be followed by by a look at the tools of a geographer-yes that includes maps. Powerpoint on tools- GEOGCH01 We will be making maps of our rooms due on Thursday. ( Be sure to include the 5 elements: 1) Title 2) Key 3) Compass 4) Scale 5) Grid. We will spend some time doing Geo-Jeopardy https://jeopardylabs.com/play/world-geography-chapter-1-test-review2 also as we will have our first Test on Thursday

Week of Sept. 9th-Mon. we will go over the results from your 1st test. Tuesday will be re-take day then we will begin Our Planet the Earth, Powerpoint presentation -click here Our Planet, The Earth, ,we will be taking a Quiz on that material afterwards. Map Test of USA next week. (Be practicing over the weekend) Current Events Due next Thursday.

Week of Sept. 16th- On Mon. we will begin looking at Climate and what influences it. See Power-point: Climate and What Influences It . Tuesday we will stop what we are doing and fulfill the mandate on Constitution day and focus on the significance of that day in our history. We will have a Quiz over  Climate and What Influences It  on Weds and then look at weather maps and learn how to predict the weather the remainder of the day. The quiz over the 50 states will be next Mon. Current Events on Thursday

Week of the 23rd- We will take our Test over the 50 states on Mon. Then look at weather maps. Then it’s off to how climate affects vegetation: How Climate affects Vegetation. Week of Sept 30th- Mon we will look over the exam and take re-takes on Tuesday if needed. Video on Natures Fury in between on both days. Weds. will be devoted to Where people live:  Where do People Live .Thursday will see a open note quiz ( Where do People Live Quiz ) along with a look at a Growing Population:  A growing Population.

Week of Oct. 7th- Conclude with A growing Population , then  we will look at why people migrate Why People Migrate , and complete an open note questionnaire. This will be followed with a session  Geo-Jeopardy. Expect a test  on Thursday. We will go over the results next Mon..

Week of Oct. 14th- Mon. we will go over the results of the Human Geography exam. Tuesday is re-take day followed by a  look at “What is Culture”  What is Culture . Weds. will see a quiz. Afterwards we will look at Social groups, Language and Religion Social Groups, Language, and Religion . Thursday is Current Events.

Week of Oct. 21st- Mon. we will give back all work then look at  Social groups, Language and Religion Social Groups, Language, and Religion, followed by a quiz. Tuesday we will find out about Economic and Political Systems, Economic and Political Systems. Weds we will have a quiz over this before launching into at Cultural Change,  Cultural Change,and completing a WS over it.

Week of Oct. 28th- Mon. we will go over all the work we have done and review (Including a Jeopardy Game) Tuesday will be our Test. Weds will see us go over the results and Thursday will be re-take day before looking at cultural traditions that are being lost.

Week of Nov. 4th- Mon. we will begin looking at What are Natural resources?   Natural resources with a take home quiz. Tuesday we will look at How people use the Land, How People Use the Land . Weds. we will look at the impact people have on the environment, including some interactive material on-line Classwork will be 1-5, pg 121. Thursday we will write  for a purpose with KAP. Afterwards, you will complete pg. 124 in your book for HW which is Mon.  Our Exam will be on Mon.

Week of Nov. 11th- Mon. will be our Test over Natural Resources, Tuesday the Results revisted. Weds. Re-takes and a look at the latest impact on the environment by man. Thursday is Current Event Day

Week of Nov. 18th- Mon. and Tuesday will be review days of all the material we have learned to date. Weds. will be your Unit Exam over Geography. Thursday we will go over the results and look at the Geo-Bee web site to prepare for next Tuesdays classroom Geo-Bee. Next Mon. will be the final re-take opportunity on the Unit Test.

Week of Nov. 25th- Mon. is re-take day on your Unit Exam. Tuesday is our class Geo-Bee contest.( Snow Day Update: We will move our re-take to Tuesday and re-schedule the Geo-Bee for another time).

Week of Dec. 2nd- On Mon. we will look at the map of Canada and plan on a map test next Mon. Lab time on Mon. so you can begin practicing,( Use the Ilike2learn.com site to practice on the provinces and their capitals)  This Tuesday, will see our first look at the history of Canada, Canada . Weds. we will conclude with the presentation and quiz over it. Thursday will be a video looking at Canada in greater detail.

Week of Dec. 9th- Mon. and Tuesday we will practice on our locations in Canada and the USA. There will be opportunities to go further with physical features for many of you as well. Weds will be your Test day. Thursday is Current Events.

Week of Dec. 16th- On Mon.  we will look at the countries first Americans  The First Americans ,  and conclude this on Tuesday with the Revolutionary War. A Quiz over this will follow. On Weds. we will look at the growth and settlement of the country up to the civil war Growth,Settlement and the Civil War . Thursday we will conclude with this and take our last quiz for the year.

Week of Jan. 6th-  On Monday, we will go over our last weeks work and then look at how the USA World Power period went down. A quiz on this will happen Tuesday night. Weds. we will look at the Cuban Missile Crisis. On Thursday we will focus on the Great Depression and look at this period through the eyes of a young boy who grew up then. This is from the award winning story “The Education of Little Tree” We will conclude this early next week and be preparing for Exam over the History of the USA later next week.

Week of Jan. 13th- On Mon. we will conclude with the “Education of Little Tree. We will then begin our review of the History of Canada and the USA and conclude on Tuesday. Our Exam will be on Weds. Current Events are Thursday.

Week of Jan. 20th- On Mon. We will have our re-take day on North America. Tuesday, we will look at the cultural similarities and differences in the USA. We will start with The Northeast, followed by The South and The Midwest at the end of the week. we will be working in class on this.

Week of Jan. 27th- Mon. we will look at the Western USA. Tuesday we will review for our Exam on Weds. On Thursday we will begin our Stock Mkt. Project.

Week of Feb. 3rd- On Mon. We will have our re-take on last weeks test. Afterwards, we will begin our look at the history of Latin America  Early Civilizations of the Americas . A quiz over this will occur on Tuesday. Weds. we will get into the lab for our final stock market choices. Afterwards, begin looking at the maps of Latin America on Ilike2learn.

Week of Feb 10th- On Mon. we will look at the  European Conquest of Latin America. Tuesday we will get back in the lab for our Ilike2learn on Latin America. Weds. we will test over the maps and conclude the European conquest. Thursday is Current Events.

Week of Feb. 17th- We will have our map test to begin the week followed by a look at the real pirates of the Caribbean. Then we will look at the Independence movement in Latin America,   Independence in Latin America .

Week of Feb. 24th-On Monday. we will look at the issues in Latin America today,   Issues in Latin America ,including: taking a closer look at the Deforestation of the Rain Forests. A take home quiz will follow. Tuesday is a review day. Weds is our Exam. Thursday we will go over the results and check our stocks.

Week of March 3rd-Re-take on Mon. We will be creating our own Banana Republics by designing Fictional Latin American Countries with Accurate Historical, Cultural, and Economic situations included. A Map of your Island nation will be needed to start you off, then a short Biography that includes items that one would expect from the region. These are to be completed in one week and shown off Monday March 17th. Good Luck my little Criollo’s! Banana RepublicsCurrent Events will be due Thursday March 13th. 

Week of March 10th- We will get into the lab this week and complete our projects. There will be a pause to see who made the most $$$ in the stock market. Thursday is current events

Week of March 17th- We will set aside time on Mon. thru Weds. to present your projects to the class.  No homework over the break.

Week of  March 31st- Mon. we will look over the results of the stock market project then get partners and take our earnings on a trip to a REAL Caribbean island. Each partnership will plan out the trip using real data. The team that can plan out the best vacation with their earnings will earn bonus points.

Week of April 7th- We will be looking at the Spanish American War, it’s causes, and it’s impacts. The connection from the Monroe Doctrine to the present with regards to the relationship between Latin America and the USA. A combination of Discussion, Video, and DBQ will be used to better get to the bottom of this important topic will be employed. Thursday will be Current Events

Week of April 14th- Mon. we will conclude with the Spanish American War. Tuesday we will tackle the DBQs together in class an assign out of class work on the remainder. Afterwards, we will take a closer look at the impact on deforestation in the Rain forest.

Week of April 21st- Mon. and Tuesday will be devoted to the deforestation topic.  We will conclude with the video and then write an opinion paper on the topic with possible solutions. (Prior to this, we will look over the DBQ results and discuss how to write a great essay) Lastly, we will look at the Cuban Missile crisis at the end of the week.

Week of April 28th- On Mon. we will conclude with the Cuban Missile crisis. Afterwards, we will begin Exploring the Caribbean with a look at Cuba. We will be completing some Worksheets and taking a Quiz. We will then look at Haiti and Puerto Rico later.

Week of May 5th- We will begin with Puerto Rico on Mon. Tuesday will be a review day and Weds. our Exam. Thursday the results and a look at some footage from the area.

Week of May 12th- Re-take day on Mon. Tuesday we will begin on Mexico and then continue throughout the week on the Latin American Mainland. Our last regular Exam will be next week.

Week of May 19th- Mon. we will be completing our work on Guatamala (WS and Quiz) this will be followed with Panama (WS and Quiz) Tuesday we will look at the Panama  Canal and  review for our Test on Weds.  There will be no re-takes on this one. Thursday will be a review day for your final on Tuesday.

Week of May 27th- Our final exam will be on Tuesday. Afterwards, we will look at the UN to wrap up the year.

Everything after this Red Break is from last year. So while we may be doing these things, the dates won’t match up. Please look above for current information.

Sept. 20th-Map Test of USA (Be practicing over the weekend) Our Planet the Earth, Powerpoint presentation -click here Our Planet, The Earth, ,we will be taking a Quiz on that material  mid-week and then look at the impact of Volcano’s on our Earth’s surface. A video showing of The Mt Pinatubo Eruption with study questions will follow.

Week of Sept 27th. We will conclude with our video of the Eruption of Mt. Pinatubo on Mon.  Then begin on Climate and what influences it. See Power-point: Climate and What Influences It . Week of Nov. 1st-Mon. conclude with Economic and Political systems and take a open note quiz after viewing video clips. Tuesday, Look at Cultural Change,  Cultural Change,and complete a WS over it. Weds will be a Review of the material for our Exam Thursday.

Week of Nov. 8th- On Mon. we will go over the results from the Cultures of the World Exam and prepare for Re-takes on Tuesday. On Weds. We will take a class Geography Bee with the Winners from each class to compete in a school wide Bee in December (TBA). Thursday is Current Event Day.

Week of Nov. 15th- We will be working all week on our Countries of the World Project. They will be due on Monday, Nov. 22nd.

Week of Nov. 22nd- Present your Countries on Monday, Late Presentations on Tuesday.

Week of Jan. 24th- On Monday we will take our Map Quiz on State Capitals, followed by a look at the results on the quiz over the first Americans. Then it’s off to growth and settlement of the country up to the civil war Growth,Settlement and the Civil War . We will take an open note quiz on this Weds. On Thursday we will look at how the USA becomes a World Power and have a take home quiz over that as well  USA World Power .

Week of Jan. 31st- On Monday, we will go over last weeks work and then look at how the USA World Power period went down. A quiz on this will happen Tuesday night. Weds. we will look at the Cuban Missile Crisis. Thursday is current events.

Week of Feb. 7th- All week, we will be looking at the customs and cultural traditions of the people of the Middle Ages/Renaissance Europe. We will focus on festivals and other ways of life for people living during that time. Expect some Power-point lecture, Video presentation and Role-playing. When all is said and done you will have an appreciation for folks back then and for your own lot in life today.

Week of Feb. 14th- We will conclude with our look at marriage traditions of the Renaissance ( Fitting with Valentines Day ), then head back to future with a look at the Cuban Missile Crisis. We will have our Exam next Tuesday over the history of the USA.

Week of Feb. 21st- We will conclude our look back at the Cuban Missile Crisis on Monday. Then on Tuesday and Weds. review for our Exam on Thursday.( http://jeopardylabs.com/play/enter-title31924)

Week of Feb. 28th- We will go over the results on Mon. and Prepare for a better showing on Tuesday. Afterwards we will focus on the Great Depression and look at this period through the eyes of a young boy who grew up then. Thusday is current Events.

Week of March 7th- We will get back to the video “Education of Little Tree” to start the week, then begin with a look at Latin America. First, we will learn the countries that we will be studying-Yes, it’s map time You will be creating maps of this region which will be due next Monday

Week of March 14th- Turn in your Maps of Latin America on Monday. We will practice for two days on our countries then take a test on this Weds. Afterwards, we will begin our look at the history of Latin America  Early Civilizations of the Americas . A quiz over this will occur on Thursday.

Week of March 21st- We will conclude with our Early Civilizations of the Americas and Quiz over this on Monday. We will look at the European Conquest ,   European Conquest .Then a look at the real Pirates of the Caribbean as we focus on the European Conquest. Thursday is Enrichment Day.

Week of April 4th- We will begin the week with a look at the Conquest by the Europeans,  European Conquest. This will be followed with  a look at the real Pirates of the Caribbean. On Thursday we will have Current Events.

Week of April 11th-We will Conclude with True Pirates of the Caribean on Monday and then Then on Tuesday we will look at the Independence movement in Latin America,   Independence in Latin America . Week of April 18th-Monday will be a review day followed by our Exam on Tuesday. Weds., we will go over the results and Thursday will be an opportunity for either a Re-take or another choice.

Week of April 26th- On Tuesday, we will begin looking at The Spanish-American War and Teddy Roosevelt and see how America viewed it then and how we live in it’s shadow even today.

Week of May 2nd- On Mon. and Tuesday, we will conclude with the Rough Riders and Cuba. Then you will write an Essay explaining how that moment in time changed both Latin America and the USA. Thursday is Current Event Day.

Week of May 9th-The Final Project begins this week. Week of-Why it’s the last WEEK!- We will be finishing the year with a more detailed look at the ramifications of deforestation in the rain forests of Latin America. Either you will be involved in the video discussion questions or researching the topic on-line and putting together a report.
